LOCAL SPORTS: High school swimming, tennis, x-country results

PORT ANGELES — It was busy in local high school sports action yesterday and if you are a Roughrider fan there is plenty to be excited about these days.

Let’s start with Sally Cole’s state-power Roughrider swim team. The young Roughriders are again dominating the Olympic League. Yesterday they swam past Sequim 124-39, winning 10 of 11 events. First place winners were: Lynzee Reid 200 Freestyle, Amayah Nelson 200 Intermediate. Yau Fu the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Butterfly. Harper McGuire the 100 Fre style and the 100 Backstroke. Brooke St Luise the 100 Breaststroke. The 200 Medley Relay Danika Asgeirsson, Brooke St Luise, Yau Fu and Harper McGuire. 200 Free style Relay Lizzy Shaw, Danika Asgeirsson, Yau Fu and Harper McGuire. 400 Relay Amayah Nelson, Flora Sullivan, Lynzee Reid and Lizzy Shaw.

The big news of the event congratulations to Yau Fu as she qualified for State in the 100 Butterfly.

In tennis action how about Brian Gundersen’s Roughriders getting a hard fought 4-3 win over Bainbridge. Ironically the Roughriders lost all 3 singles matches yet they won all 4 doubles matches.  In singles action, Nathan Basden lost 6-0; 6-2, Matthew Miller lost 6-4; 6-0 and C. J Elliott lost 6-2; 6-4. In doubles action, Luke Flodstrom and Tate Alton won 6-4; 6-2, Reid Schmidt and Keatyn Hoch won 6-2 6-4, Austin Worthington and Grant Butterworth won 6-3; 6-3 and Cater Gundersen and Garrett Buerer won 6-3; 6-2.

The Roughriders are now 9-1 on the season and have another tough match at North Kitsap today with the first serve at 4 pm and Sequim will host Kingston at 4 pm.

In cross country, the Roughrider boys finished 4th at Bainbridge with Tymur Lytvak finishing 12th. Colby Ellefson of Sequim finished 17th. For the Port Angeles girls, Miriam Cobb placed 11th.

In middle school football, Sequim is now 3-0 with a 25-12 win at Forks. Dominik Johnson and Andy Reynolds scored touchdowns for the Wolves. Chase Crossman and Bryce Crossman were standouts on defense and Dustin Flanigan had an interception.

Stevens lost at Port Townsend 19-14.

There is soccer action today. The Roughriders (4-4) travel to Kingston and the 12th ranked 6-1 Sequim Wolves will be a 2-touchdown favorite at home against North Mason.

In volleyball action, the Roughriders (3-5) travel to Kingston and the Sequim Wolves (5-3) host North Mason both matches start at 6:45 pm.

In NWAC soccer action last night, the 6th ranked Peninsula Pirate men tied Everett 1-1. The #1 ranked Pirate Women buried Everett 10-0. Former Roughrider Anna Petty is having an outstanding season as she scored 4 goals.

It’s the biggest Roughrider football game in years. The Roughriders take on a 5-0 Bremerton Knight team that is ranked 7th in the state by the Associated Press Poll. The winner will have a big lead for the Olympic League’s 2nd playoff spot and all but guaranteed one of the 3 playoff spots.

You can hear all the action on KONP starting with “The Dustin Clark Show” starting at 5:30 pm. That will be followed by the “Roughrider Lockerroom Show” featuring Roughrider linebackers Landon Jones and James Browning. The “Roughrider VIP Halftime Show” will feature Roughrider swimmers Yau Fu and Danika Asgeirsson. Oly Archibald and Greg Thomas will have the live play by play with the kickoff at 6:30 pm.
