PORT ANGELES – OPNET Detectives arrested a 40-year-old Olalla woman Thursday on multiple felony charges, including Controlled Substances Homicide, Delivery of a Controlled Substance, and Introducing Contraband.
Lauren Smith was booked into the Clallam County Jail after being identified as the person who provided methamphetamine to an inmate at Clallam Bay Corrections Center, causing his overdose death.
The case began on August 13 when corrections staff responded to a cell for an inmate showing the signs of a drug overdose. Staff attempted lifesaving efforts, but were unable to revive 32-year-old Yakima resident Kody Swearngin. Evidence samples indicated a positive result for meth.
Investigators reviewed video surveillance, which revealed that Smith came to visit Swearngin just hours before to his death. The video showed that Smith gave a small package to Swearngin during the visit, which Swearngin swallowed.
An autopsy was performed, and the package was recovered from Swearngin’s stomach. A preliminary test of the substance in the package showed a positive result for the presence of meth.
Smith was arrested in Olalla, Washington and taken into custody without incident.
