Port Angeles – A brush fire ignited along Hwy 101 just east of Port Angeles Monday morning burned about 1.5 acres before Clallam 2 fire crews got it out.
It was about 11:20 when crews were dispatched to the scene across from the Highway 101 Deer Park Rest Area.
An on-scene Washington DOT worker told firefighters he was mowing down brush and grass in the field area and hit a large rock which caused a spark. That started the dry grass on fire and it spread quickly. Upon arrival of the first fire engine, crews deployed hose lines around the fire perimeter to contain the spread of fire.
WSDOT temporarily blocked all eastbound traffic so fire units could clear the scene safely since the fire was located on a blind corner around Morse Creek.
