DUNGENESS – One person is dead after a massive explosion and fire west of Sequim.
About seven Tuesday night, emergency responders were called to the report of an explosion in the 100 block of June Place that’s near Woodcock and Kitchen-Dick Roads.
They discovered an entire house destroyed by an explosion and subsequent fire. The explosion caused damage to several houses in the neighborhood and the neighboring residences were evacuated.
Fire department personnel extinguished the fire and located a deceased male inside of what remained of the residence. His identity has not been released and the coroner is still investigating. There are no other reported injuries or fatalities.
A neighbor, who only wished to be identified as Logan, described what happened:
“We were sitting outside when it happened. We heard an explosion. I went to grab my buddy, and by the time we got back outside, the whole place was up in smoke. Little explosions kept going off for 10 or 15 minutes afterwards. The RV out front exploded to the neighbors right next to them. There is part of their roof lodged in their roof, as well as several windows blown out. And all of the windows on my studio were blown out and everything was knocked off the walls and tables and broken all over the place. Luckily everyone else in the neighborhood is, okay, we’ve heard from pretty much everybody.”
The blast was heard for dozens of miles. Reports of the explosion came as far west as Freshwater Bay near Joyce.
Clallam County Sheriff’s Office has requested assistance from Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) investigators to determine the cause of the explosion and fire.
