hoto: The Port Angeles Roughrider boys placed 9th at the state golf tournament

LIBERTY LAKE — The high school golf season has concluded at the state tournament. Port Angeles Roughrider Piper Williams finished as the 17th best golfer in the 2A class, shooting a total of 177 after two days. Williams finished an outstanding Roughrider career as a three-sport letterman in soccer, basketball and golf.

For the boys, Phoenix Flores finished 34th shooting a 163. Edun Bailey shot a 168 good for 38th place.

Cole Smithson of Sequim finished 39th, shooting a 169.  Zach Thompson of Sequim shot a 176 for 43rd place. The Roughrider boys finished 9th in the state and the Sequim boys finished 10th in the state.

KONP would like to thank Port Angeles coaches Anderson and DuPuis for all their help covering their outstanding student athletes this past golf season.

The state fast pitch tournament starts Friday morning in a tough and competitive field of 16 class 2A teams. Last year, Port Angeles went 1-2 and did not make it to the trophy round.

The path to hardware will not be any easier this year. The 6th ranked Roughriders start the morning at 9 am against the 11th ranked Cedarcrest Red Wolves, the 3rd place team from the very tough 2A-3A WESCO League. The winner will play the winner of the 3rd ranked Ridgefield – 14th ranked East Valley game. The losers will play in a loser out game at 11:30 am. The winners will play at 3:30 pm.

Several Sequim and Port Angeles high school fast pitch players have been named to the all Olympic League team. On the first team:

Pitcher: Laney Vig, Sequim

Infield: Natalie Robinson, Port Angeles; Hannah Bates Sequim; Taylee Rome Sequim.

Outfield: Mia Pozernick. Sequim; Lily Halberg PA.

Utility: Lexie King, Sequim

Making the second team:

Pitcher: Cheyenne Zimmer, PA.

Catcher: Mikki Green, Sequim

Infield: Taylor Worthington, PA.

Outfield: Ava-Anne Sheahan,  PA

Utility: Heidi Leitz, PA

Sportsmanship awards went to Alex Money of Port Angeles and Sequim’s Sammy Bacon.
