LOCAL SPORTS: Riders take second in Olympic League track

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Roughriders boys track team placed 2nd at this weekend’s Olympic League track meet.

Winning individual league championships were:  Jack Gladfelter in the 1600 and 3200 meters, and Parker Nickerson the Long Jump and the triple jump.

Winning championships for Sequim were: Andrew Brown 110 Hurdles and the high jump; Jolene Vaara in the long jump and high jump; Ivy Barrett won the 400;

the 4×200 relay Hi’ilei Robinson, Kaitlyn Bloomenrader, Jolene Vaara and Ivy Barrett;

the 4×400 Relay Ivy Barrett , Hi’ilei Robinson, Jolene Vaara and Kaitlyn Bloomenrader.

The district meet is May 17th and 20th at Renton.

In soccer action, the Roughriders beat Kingston 5-1.

The Roughriders tied the score at the 20th minute on a penalty kick from Keane McClain. At the 23rd minute Hannes Spieker scored to put the Roughriders 2-1.

At the 42nd minute, Matthew Miller scored his first goal and in the 66th minute scored his 2nd goal, to give the Roughriders a 4-1 lead. Hannes Spieker scored his 2nd goal at the 79th minute for the 5-1 Roughrider win. The Roughriders will open district play at home against Highline tomorrow night at 7 pm.

The Olympic League girls tennis tournament starts this morning at North Kitsap at 9 am.

The league golf tournament starts this morning at Kingston with the tee off time at 8 am.

In district baseball action, the Roughriders are the #5 seed they will play #4 White River tomorrow at White River with the first pitch at 4 pm. The winner will automatically qualify for state and will play in a semifinal game Saturday at Central Kitsap. The loser will play Wednesday against the winner of the Franklin Pierce – Sequim game. Sequim will host Franklin Pierce tomorrow at Sequim with the first pitch at 4 pm.

It’s the final week of the girls fast pitch season with the North Kitsap Vikings now ranked #1 in the state just need one win or a Olympic or Port Angeles loss and  they are league Champions. The Wolves 9-3 are currently in 2nd place and skipper Mike McFarlen and his staff have done one of the best coaching jobs in the state. The Wolves have two tough games on the road at Olympic tomorrow and at Port Angeles on Friday.

Port Angeles and Olympic are both 8-3  the Roughriders host Kingston tomorrow, North Kitsap Thursday and Sequim on Friday.
