SEQUIM — The regional and state high school basketball brackets are out. If you are the Sequim Wolves, you have the opportunity to make one of the greatest upsets of state tournament history having to travel to #1 ranked and defending state champion Ellensburg.
The Bulldogs are 21-0 and have not lost in more than 2 years. Even though they lost a ton of talent from last year’s team, including their guard who went to Montana State, the Bulldogs have one of the biggest teams in the state, starting with 6’6″ senior Olivia Anderson who did not start last year. Throw in 6’4″ sophomore Alana Mars and you have a front court that is bigger than some PAC 12 schools. Tip off is at 8 pm Friday night on the Bulldogs own home floor.
Because the Wolves are a top 8 seed, they have already qualified for the trip to Yakima. If the Wolves can’t pull off the upset, they will play Wednesday night at 9pm at the Yakima Sundome against the winner of the #9 seed Sehome – #16 seed Sammanish game. That game will be broadcast live on Newsradio KONP.
The Port Angeles Roughriders, the #14 seed, will have a quick rematch with number #11 seed Renton. Renton just knocked off the Roughriders in the district tournament 44-42. Port Angeles led most of the game by 8-12 points but blew a 9-point 4th quarter lead. Renton did not have a lead until their winning shot with 3 seconds left. The Roughriders will take on Renton Friday night at Mountain View High School in Auburn with the tip off time at 6 pm. You can hear the game on Newsradio KONP with the Les Schwab Tires pre game show starting at 5:45 pm. Oly Archibald will have the play by play.
If the Roughriders beat Renton, they will play at the Yakima Sundome Wednesday at 3:45 pm against the loser of the #3 seed Burlington Edison – #6 Seed FW West game. Burlington Edison lost last year in the state championship game to Ellensburg. WF West beat Port Angeles early in the season 56-28.
