RENTON — For 30 of the 32 minutes in last night’s district basketball game between Port Angeles and Renton the Roughriders had a 8-10 point lead. And for 30 of those minutes PA looked by far to be the better basketball team at the West Central Bi-District girls basketball tournament. However, Renton outscored Port Angeles 17 – 6 in the last quarter and did not take the lead until there was just 3 seconds left in the game to give Renton the 44-42 come from behind win over a broken hearted Roughrider team that played hard but in the last quarter took too many 3 point shots and made too many costly turnovers.
As usual, Anna Petty led the Roughriders with 10 points. Freshman Lindsay Smith had 9 points and especially for a freshman made big plays all night long. Sophomore Lexie Smith had a big night on the boards. Paige Mason also played very well and scored 7 points. Freshman Teanna Clark hit a 3-point buzzer beater at the end of the first half that sent an energetic Roughrider team into the locker room with a 24-13 lead. The Roughriders will now host North Mason tomorrow night. A win by the heavily favored Roughriders would put them at Mount Tahoma Saturday at 2:30 pm. The Roughriders would play the winner of #7 seed North Kitsap and #10 Seed Foster. The winner of that game moves on to the regional.
