LOCAL SPORTS: Peninsula men continue undefeated season start

MOUNT VERNON — The red-hot Peninsula Pirates men’s basketball team came up with 3 straight wins at the Skagit Valley Turkey Tournament in Mount Vernon. The Pirates beat Douglas College of British Columbia 84-68, NW Indian College 72-48 and Big Bend College 80-48. Roosevelt Williams, Jr.; the sophomore from Perth, Australia; had a great tournament. He averaged 20 points per game. and 8 rebounds per game.  Mikey Medlock Jr. averaged 16 points per game, Max D’Amato averaged 10 points per game and Aiden Olmstead, the former North Kitsap Viking, continues to impress off the bench. Olmstead averaged 8 points per game and 10 rebounds per game. The Pirates are now 5-0 on the season.

If you are a big NWAC College basketball fan you are in luck as Peninsula College will host the “Pirate Classic” this weekend. The Pirate women will tip off against Chemeketa Friday night at 6pm. On Saturday, the Pirate women will tip off against NW Indian College at 3 pm. At 5 pm the Pirate men will tip off against Southern Conference powerhouse Lane College. Lane knocked out the Pirates in the first round of last year’s NWAC tournament. On Sunday at 4 pm, the Pirate men will tip off against Mt Hood. Then at 6 pm the Pirate women will tip off against 2nd-ranked Lower Columbia College. LCC beat the Pirates on a buzzer beater in last year’s NWAC Championship game. That game will be broadcast on Newsradio KONP.

Tomorrow night is the home opener for Mike Poindexter’s Port Angeles Roughriders girls basketball team as they host state class 1B powerhouse the Neah Bay Red Devils. The Red Devils return most of their team after losing in last year’s state championship game to Mount Vernon Christian. Tipoff is set for 7 pm and you can hear the live play by play on Newsradio KONP. Oly Archibald and Greg Thomas will have the live play by play.
