PORT ANGELES — The 2022-2023 NWAC basketball season starts tonight for both the Peninsula Pirate women’s and men’s basketball teams.
Allison Crumb’s women travels to Pasco tonight where the number one-ranked Pirates take on number five-ranked Walla Walla. The Pirates will play Columbia Basin tomorrow at 2 pm.

Donald Rollman’s Pirate men will take on Tacoma tonight at 8 pm and will take on number three-ranked Green River tomorrow at 2 pm. The Pirates will start two returning sophomores in the back court in 6’4″ guard Mikey Medlock out of Las Vegas and 6’3″ guard Roosevelt Williams Jr out of Perth Australia. Medlock had a solid freshman season for the Pirates averaging seven points per game while shooting 48% from the field. Williams averaged nine points per game while shooting 48% from the field.
At point guard will be one of the most explosive players in the NWAC in point guard Ese Onakpoma, a 6’4″ freshman out of Naugatuck CT.
Another high-prized incoming recruit is 6’6″ forward Max D’Amato from Melbourne, Australia. D’Amato is an outstanding shooter from the perimeter. The Pirates will also start Malik Jackson 6’6″ sophomore out of prestigious Dublin High School in Oakland, California. Rollman says he is likely to have different starting lineups throughout the season. A local talent is former all-state forward Aiden Olmstead who helped lead the North Kitsap Vikings to a class 2A state championship. Also coming off the bench will be former Port Angeles Roughrider Gary Johnson a 5’10” sophomore.
Both Pirate men’s games this weekend will be broadcast live on KONP News Radio and on the web at myclallamcounty.com. The 7 Cedars Casino Pre game shows will start 15 minutes before tip off. Oly Archibald will have the play by play and Bill Bates will have the color commentary.

There was one game in the Peninsula Basketball League as Arrow Marine beat Adam Tree Service 62-49. Kyler Rollness hit for 25 and Caleb Treider scored 19 for Arrow Marine and Josh King had 28 for the Quilcene team.
