FEDERAL WAY — It was an unbelievable three days for the Port Angeles Roughriders swim team at the WIAA State Swim and Dive Meet in Federal Way. Sally Coles’ Roughriders finished with a 5th-place team trophy out of 42 schools. In the 11 swim events, the Roughriders brought home 15 individual medals. The old “sea captain” senior Mackenzie DuBois brought home two, 3rd-place medals. DuBois was 3rd in the 100 butterfly and was part of the 400 free style relay team that placed 3rd with teammates Harper McGuire, Yau Fu and Danika Asgeirsson. In the 200-medley relay, the Roughriders placed 8th with Brooke St Louis, Rachel Cooper, Yau Fu and Lizzy Shaw. The Roughriders finished 5th in the 200 free style relay with Lizzy Shaw, Danika Asgeirsson, Harper McGuire and Mackenzie DuBois. In the 100-back stroke, Danika Asgeirsson placed 8th. Other swimmers who placed in the top 15 in individual events were: Sara Wilson, Yau Fu, and Harper McGuire.  In diving, Grace Possinger finished 15th and Lynzee Reid finished 22nd. It was a special year for these outstanding student athletes in the pool and the classroom and were great representatives for Port Angeles high school and the city of Port Angeles.

At the Bi District Volleyball Tournament, the Port Angeles Roughriders played their hearts out and went 2-1. But because they were put into the tournament as a #10 seed, they were in the losers’ bracket and had to win three straight games to go to state. In a head scratcher, the Roughriders dominated #7 seed Foster three games to one. Foster as a #7 seed had a much easier path to the state tournament. Foster was given a huge advantage over the Roughriders, after the Roughriders proved they were by far a better team than Foster. Friday morning, the Roughriders beat Clover Park 3-2 in a great game. The Roughriders then beat Foster 3-1. Then on Saturday against #3 seed Sammamish in a winner-to-state-loser-out-game, the huge under dogs Roughriders grabbed game one. But the height of Sammamish took over and Sammamish won the next three ending an outstanding season for the Roughriders.

The Sequim Wolves were swept by #4 seed White River, then swept Orting 3-0. On Saturday morning, Sequim took on Olympic League rivals North Kitsap in the winner-to- state-loser-out game. In game one, it appeared Sequim had won 25-23 but a call was reversed. The Vikings came back to win 27-25. That loss came back to haunt Sequim, as the Wolves loss in five games 3-2. The Wolves had an outstanding season as well finishing 2nd in the Olympic league. North Kitsap was the only Olympic league team of the 5 heading to the state tournament.

That’s a rap on the Fall sports season, practice for the Winter sports teams begins today.
