PORT ANGELES – Work has begun to install three high-tech public restrooms facilities in downtown Port Angeles.

The old concrete block restroom near the breezeway parking lot has been torn down and site work has begun there, and site work is also under way at the Gateway Transit Center, where two facilities will be installed.

The City’s new restrooms, known as Portland Loos, are designed to support all members of the community and will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The single occupant restroom design is ADA-compliant, easy to maintain, and uses crime prevention principles to discourage illegal activities and generate higher usage rates. Portland Loos have stainless steel posts, toilet, and wall panels for durability and easy cleaning; angled louvers for privacy; a skylight; baby changing station; recessed handwashing station with air dryer, tempered water, soap dispensers, and hand sanitizers. And, unlike the existing concrete block restrooms, the new facilities will not require winterization during the cold months.

Funding for the project is budgeted in Capital Projects at a cost of about $730,000.
