Crab fishing open as of July 1

CLALLAM COUNTY — Crab fishing opened Friday in Washington state.

While some Western Washington crabbing areas, such as along much of the Pacific Coast and Columbia River, have yearlong crabbing seasons, the season starts July 1 in most other areas.

For East Juan de Fuca Strait, Port Angeles Harbor, and Discovery Bay, you can catch crab July 1 through September 5, Thursdays through Mondays only. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are closed.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife says each year, sport fishers catch more than 1.5 million pounds of Dungeness crab.

Information on which days of the week other areas are open is available at wdfw.wa.gov.

Just make sure you have the proper license and the proper catch record card, if crabbing for Dungeness crab.
