Vancouver Island, BC – Bad weather has been hindering the removal of debris from the containers that washed ashore after the container ship Zim Kingston spilled 109 boxes off the Strait of Juan de Fuca last weekend.

The Canadian Coast Guard and a contractor hired by the shipowner have deployed helicopters to remove four containers from the beach at Cape Scott, an isolated wilderness area on the north end of Vancouver Island.

Over the last several days, crews hired by the shipowner removed 71 refrigerators and 100 bags of garbage from the beaches.

The Coast Guard’s helicopters have been making overflights to look for more containers off the coast of Vancouver Island.
