PORT ANGELES – The smoky haze in our area today is coming from fires east of the mountains. It’s not as bad as we saw last summer but, according to local weather guru Cliff Mass, it’s about to get worse tonight and tomorrow.
Mass says airflow is about to change and bring a “smoke storm” down from British Columbia, Canada.
Mass predicts that by 5:00am Friday, serious smoke will be crossing the Strait of Juan De Fuca. The good news is; it should be mostly cleared away on Saturday when the wind shifts again and comes in off the ocean, blowing the smoke east.
We heard from Undersheriff Ron Cameron today, saying PENCOM is getting hammered with 911 calls from people wondering about the smoke. 911 is great for reporting fires, not so much for being curious.
We hope this helps keep their phone lines open for emergencies.
