State lawmakers convene under tightest security in our history

OLYMPIA (KONP staff) — Washington state lawmakers convened their 105-day legislative session Monday at the Capitol building in Olympia under tight security provided by the Washington State Patrol with backup provided by 750 Washington State National Guard members.

At least 2 people were arrested Monday morning on the Capitol campus including a woman who used an RV to block a roadway. According to Washington State Patrol, the woman refused to leave and was taken into custody.

Several other people were in the RV at the time and chose to leave when asked.

Over the weekend, fences were placed around the statehouse and up to the legislative buildings, and the State Patrol has tightened security around the Governor’s mansion, after some local intelligence was gathered about plans to take over the State Capitol Building.

Lawmakers are meeting in person Monday largely to adopt rules that will allow them to meet virtually during the rest of the session.

After that, in the Senate, regular floor votes will be conducted in a hybrid format, with a mix of senators present in the chamber and others participating remotely. The House has decided to do the rest of its work remotely.

State Patrol Spokesman Chris Loftis says the fencing will be in place for “as long as necessary.” He said the response is the largest on the Capitol Campus in the state’s history and that it serves two purposes; for protection but also to send a message about democracy.
