PORT ANGELES – The city of Port Angeles is a step closer to a big change for Race Street.

This week, the city council accepted a federal grant to complete design and phase-one construction of the main arterial.

The city gets $2 million dollars and will have to match $270 thousand dollars. The city will make that match using $135,000 in city funds and another $135,000 worth of Washington State Department of Transportation Toll credits.

Earlier, the city council approved the project that is expected to begin next year.

It will develop a path for walking and bicycles along Race Street from Front Street to the Olympic National Park Visitor Center. New sidewalks and vegetation would be added as well. The changes conform with recommendations made by the American Institute of Architects a decade ago as one way to improve Port Angeles’ accessibility and aesthetics.

The city council voted unanimously on the funding mechanism this week.
