OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK – That smoldering fire in Olympic National Park on the slopes of Mount Dana is no longer visible in terms of smoke, but officials say it’s still active and has spread to about 40 acres.

The most recent recon flight, conducted on September 6, showed that the fire was still smoldering in the understory despite recent rains. The remote fire is thought to have started after several days of lightning strikes in late August.

Weather forecasts call for another one to two inches of rainfall over the next seven days, and park officials expect minimal fire spread.

They say they’ll continue to monitor the fire and provide updates if the situation changes.

The webcam at the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center has been moved in the direction of Mt. Dana so the general public can view the area.
