OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK – By all accounts, forecasts say it’s going to be a warm, dry summer in the northwest.

Olympic National Park, Olympic National Forest and Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest are experiencing moderate to severe drought conditions, and we’re only in the first week of summer. Federal park officials say this has already led to above normal potential for forest and range fires.

A news release Wednesday says there’s been close communication and coordination with federal, state, and local resources to ensure prompt response to any reported fires, but if conditions continue to worsen, some level of fire restrictions will most likely be implemented, and they’re urging the public to be extra vigilant in terms of fire safety.

To reduce the risk, they’re reminding us all that fireworks are prohibited on federal public lands. They ask that we learn of any fire restrictions before we go camping.

Never leave a campfire unattended, and ensure campfires are completely out before leaving the campsite.

Smokers are reminded to never drop butts on the ground.

If you see a fire, dial 911.

Updated fire danger and fire information will be posted on the park and forest websites as the season progresses.
