PORT ANGELES – 38-year-old Joey Maillet, arrested in the Fred’s Guns burglary case, appeared in Clallam County Superior Court via monitor Tuesday and was given his conditions of release should he post bail.
Leaning in toward the speaker because of hearing problems, Maillet told the judge through his defense attorney Harry Gasnick that if released on his own recognizance he would live at Serenity House in Port Angeles until his next appearance in court.
But Clallam County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jesse Espinoza argued that because Maillet is a Canadian citizen, has no connections here and is known to travel widely, is a known drug user, a risk to the community and has not told law enforcement what happened to the guns he is accused of stealing, he should remain in custody.
While Superior Court Judge Brent Basden largely agreed with the prosecutor, he set Maillet’s bail at $350,000 with conditions. Basden said that if Maillet should post bail, he must be fitted with an electronic monitoring device, stay in Clallam County, keep away from Fred’s Guns and Lietz Farm Supply, surrender his passport or other identification, and return to court on Thursday, May 23.
Maillet told the court that he is indigent and considers himself unemployable.
