SEQUIM – Three people have been arrested after homeowners interrupted a burglary of their home near Sequim.

Early yesterday afternoon, residents of a Lost Mountain Road home arrived to find their house was being burglarized. Clallam County sheriff’s officials say one of the homeowners found 40-year-old Nancy Birkland of Port Angeles sitting in a car in their driveway. When questioned by the homeowner, Birkland said she was looking for her dog. That’s when the homeowners noticed the front door of the house was open and called 9-1-1.

Birkland drove away and abandoned her vehicle at the end of the driveway with the engine still running and fled on foot.     Meanwhile, one of the homeowners went inside their house and confronted 50-year-old John Hopperstad of Sequim.  The homeowner and Hopperstad struggled and Hopperstad eventually broke free and ran outside. The homeowner gave chase and was able to restrain Hopperstad until sheriff’s deputies got there.

The suspect vehicle, which was registered to 51-year-old Anthony Eacrett of Port Angeles, was searched and towed away. A few hours after the burglary was reported, Birkland was located about a half mile from the burglary scene. Shortly after that, Eacrett was located walking on Lost Mountain Road a few miles from the scene and was apprehended.

All three suspects were transported to the jail on burglary and theft charges.
