SEQUIM – Sequim School District Superintendent Gary Neal announced his resignation at last night’s School Board meeting, effective June 30. He did not give a reason for leaving the District at the time of the announcement.

Our calls to Neal’s office have gone unreturned since Tuesday morning, but School Board President Brian Kuh shared with us a message that he received from Neal. It reads:

“I am going to Vanir Construction Management, Inc. where I will be leading their K12 program for community-intense clients assisting with pre-bond/levy projects and other similar projects that relies on community engagement. They will rely on me for leadership in the K12 education market for latest educational matters.”

Vanir Construction, headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, describes itself as “a leading minority-and woman-owned… construction management firm”. The company worked with the district under Neal’s leadership on renovation and expansion of its central kitchen in the past year after the Capital Projects Levy passed in 2017.

Neal has been on a year-by-year contract since being promoted on an interim basis in 2015, and his current contract was set to run through 2020.

He applied for the job of Superintendent of the Hockinson School District in southwest Washington this year but was passed over for the position.
