Port Angeles – A former Port Angeles resident has been sentenced to nine-months in jail after pleading guilty to vehicular assault in a DUI-related crash.

Judge Lauren Erickson sentenced 51-year-old David Bolewicki, now from North Bend, at the top of the recommended guidelines under the plea deal.

He also will be under 12 months community custody where he must get substance abuse evaluation and treatment as necessary. Bolewicki must also complete a DUI victims’ impact panel.

In March 2017, investigators say Bolewicki failed to yield as he entered Highway 112 west of Port Angeles from Power Plant Road and collided with Susan and Gary Treider of Port Angeles. Susan Treider suffered a fracture to her right knee and finger. Gary Treider fractured his sternum, ribs, and neck and spine.

Blood test results revealed that Bolewicki was driving with twice the legal limit of marijuana in his blood stream. According to court documents, Bolewicki admitted to drinking two beers earlier in the day and smoking marijuana the night before.

Bolewicki was originally charged with two counts of Vehicular Assault where he faced a sentencing range of 12 to 14 months of incarceration if convicted of both counts. The State agreed to amend one of the counts to include both victims and dismiss the second count in exchange for Bolewicki’s guilty plea.

Bolewicki has prior convictions for DUI-related crimes and one conviction for second-degree assault, but prosecutors said those convictions are too old and couldn’t be counted toward his sentencing range.  However, prosecutors say Bolewicki now has a second strike under the state’s “Three Strikes” law.
