(Sequim) — The oldest, continuously-running festival in the state starts today in Sequim.

The 124th Sequim Irrigation Festival begins a week-long run.

The festival celebrates the “tapping” of water in the Dungeness Valley, turning the area into agricultural prime land.

The first weekend of the festival has been dubbed Crazy Callen Weekend, named for D.R. Callen who had a crazy idea bringing water to the valley for agriculture.

The weekend includes the Crazy Daze Breakfast, First Friday Art Walk, and Arts & Crafts Fair Sequim Farmers Market Sequim High School Operetta. All event are within walking distance of downtown Sequim.

The biggest events happen next weekend, including the grand parade set for a week from Saturday at noon. There will also be a logging show, carnival and many other events to wrap up the festival.
