IDAHO – The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday that the victim in Sunday’s fatal shooting in Hayden, Idaho is Michael “Topher” Clark – a man who became famous after his tales of smuggling marijuana from Canada was detailed in a Rolling Stone article and movie.

Clark, 45, was gunned down about 1:45 Sunday morning after a fight erupted outside The Tipsy Pine bar.

Scott M. White, 33, of Coeur d’Alene, was arrested in connection with the shooting. He faces a charge of second-degree murder.

Witnesses told deputies the two men were fighting inside the bar when the altercation erupted outside in the parking lot, where White shot Clark. White was detained until deputies arrived.

Clark, who went by “Topher” to friends, was immortalized in a 2005 Rolling Stone article titled “Kid Cannabis.” A movie of the same name was released in 2014.

The story chronicled Clark and his friend Nate Norman’s drug empire, which grew out of Coeur d’Alene after the pair bought marijuana in Canada and sold it in Idaho, making a huge amount of cash.

The two were indicted in 2003, along with 22 others, on federal drug charges.
