PORT ANGELES – A longtime Port Angeles hardware store is shutting down.

Sunset Do-It Best Hardware has sold its store building and assets and will shutter the business along Marine Drive.

Lumber Traders, which operates Angeles Millwork and Hartnagel Building Supply, plans to expand by taking over some of Sunset’s products at its two Port Angeles locations.

The Sunset building will be transferred to Platypus Marine. That company plans to turn it into administrative offices. Platypus has planned and completed environmental cleanup for a new marine trades operations building directly across the street from the Sunset Do It Best store.

The moves mark the end of being in the retail business for Bill and Fred Hermann. Bill Hermann says this will free up resources to expand Hermann Brothers Trucking which recently acquired Atlas Trucking to go with its forest products business.

In a prepared statement, officials with all the companies say they expect the changes will result in more services and expansion locally.

Lumber Traders’ CEO Kelly Fox says all of the employees at Sunset will have the opportunity to get new jobs at the expanded companies.
