CLALLAM COUNTY – Clallam County PUD Board of Commissioners will hold two public workshops this coming Monday, February 4 to further explain their upcoming conversion to “smart meters”, which will begin later this year.

The new meters use wi-fi to report customer power usage, eliminating the need for meter-readers to drive throughout the district. Smart meters will also allow the PUD to better deal with power outages by letting them see in real time exactly which customers are down.

The meter conversion is not without controversy, with some customers airing concerns ranging from the additional radio-frequency signals they would generate around the home to questioning their accuracy.

The PUD will allow customers to opt out of the new meters, at a cost of $30 per month, another area of concern for some.

The meetings are this coming Monday, February 4 at 1:30 and 5:30 at the District’s Main Office at 104 Hooker Road in Carlsborg.
