OLYMPIA (AP) — Olympia will start clearing away tents, pallets and trash that cover a city-owned parking lot downtown next week as they prepare for a new strategy to manage the homeless camp.

Dozens of the homeless people living at the site will be forced to leave, but they will be allowed to return in about two weeks under new rules.

The city plans to install fences around the site and allow people to live there indefinitely.

Tenants who register with the city will be given tents, assigned camping spots, and have access to running water and portable toilets.

Olympia Homeless Response Coordinator Colin DeForrest says the goal is for tenants to eventually find permanent housing, so the camp will be considered a “mitigation” site.
