A group of King County residents wants voters to have the final say on whether Safeco Field should get $135 million in county founding.

The group, called Citizens Against Sport Stadium Subsidies, filed a referendum on the matter and will have to collect enough signatures to get it on the ballot.

The effort comes just over a week after the King County Council approved spending $135 million in public funding for improvements at Safeco Field where the Seattle Mariners play.

The Mariners initially asked for $180 million in funding to fix wear and tear at stadium, built 19 years ago.

Mariners Executive Vice President Fred Riviera says the team wants to call Safeco Field home for the next 100 years.
