PORT ANGELES – Clallam County has a new farm-use ordinance.

Supporters say the county’s first-ever Agricultural Accessory Uses ordinance aims to support the farming community and preserve rural character and will simplify and reduce costs. It supports activities like onsite retail stands, greenhouses, farmers markets, U-picks, farm tours, and work stays for farms of one acre or more.

Previously, many accessory users required a conditional use permit (CUP). Now, farmers can engage in these activities outright or with a $150 certificate of compliance. Temporary retail stands no longer need permits, while onsite stores and greenhouses need a certificate and can operate from sunrise to 10 p.m. from May to October.

Farmers markets are allowed on farms of five or more acres with a certificate; smaller farms need a CUP. U-picks and farm tours need a certificate for smaller farms. Work stays are allowed on larger farms with a certificate but are prohibited on farms under five acres. Farm activities like corn mazes are limited to 21 days a year, with smaller farms needing a CUP.
