PORT ANGELES – Coast Guard crews from Port Angeles plucked a survivor and a dog from a boat that sank near Henry Island.

The Coast Guard received notice early Friday morning that the 48-foot commercial fishing boat Chief Joseph was taking on water with one person and a dog aboard. Both safely evacuated onto a life raft. The survivor and the dog were later located, picked up by the Coast Guard Cutter Adelie, and transported to Port Angeles.

A sheen on the water and debris from the sunken vessel were observed during aerial reconnaissance.

The Coast Guard cutter crew recovered items from the scene. The vessel, carrying 400 to 500 gallons of diesel out of its maximum capacity of 850 gallons, poses an environmental threat.

Global Dive and Salvage has been contracted to assess the vessel’s condition and manage pollution risks. The incident’s cause remains under investigation.
