SHINE – Just as Washington State Dept. of Transportation crews are about to wrap up 2 weeks of daytime closures on the Hood Canal Bridge for annual maintenance comes the news of a whole new round of nighttime closures beginning May 13.

Overnight travelers are being told to prepare for a series of 7 hour closures in May and June, from 10pm to 5am, most weeknights over a four-week period.

The first set of overnight closures will begin 10pm on Monday, May 13 and continue each night through Saturday, May 18. The closures will continue during most nights each week with the final one scheduled for June 10.

Each night of work is weather-dependent and could be rescheduled. Real time information is available on the WSDOT Hood Canal Bridge web page and the WSDOT app.

Due to the nature of the work, the bridge will not open for any traffic, including emergency response.

The bridge will be open to traffic on Memorial Day weekend.

During the seven-hour overnight closures, construction crews will replace worn shock absorbers on the bridge. The shock absorbers are an essential feature of the bridge that help keep both halves of the span connected.

This is the final phase of the 3-year Hood Canal Bridge Center Lock Rehabilitation project.

Brief daytime closures also planned

In addition to the overnight work, crews will also work during the day to replace the center locks that hold the bridge together. However, this work can be done with the bridge open to traffic. It only requires short 30 to 40-minute test openings during weekday daytime hours. This is about as long as a typical inspection opening.

These test openings are scheduled for some time between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. May 6-7, May 24, May 28-29 and June 14.
