PORTLAND — Former Port Angeles Roughrider distance runner Jack Gladfelter finished 3rd overall in the 5000m race last Saturday at the Larry Byerly Invitational in Portland. It is the first time Gladfelter has competed in the 5000m race in his college career. Gladfelter’s second-fastest time in Corban University history of 14:37.37 qualifies him for the NAIA National Championship 5000m event on May 23rd in Marion, Indiana.

The Port Angeles Roughrider tennis team went on the road and swept Kingston 7-0. In singles, Waverly Mead won 6-1, 6-0. Bridget Weed won 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, Sarah Hancock and Abby Robinson won 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Katie Sperr-Crane and Rylie Medley won 6-3, 6-1. Cayleigh Alward and Abby Riffle won 6-1, 6-0. Head coach Stephanie Gochnour has done a great job with her team’s improvement. The Roughriders travel to Bainbridge today and Sequim goes to North Mason. Both matches start at 4:00.

In baseball action, in a game you heard on KONP Newsradio, the Port Angeles Roughriders beat North Mason 10-6. Roughrider Pitcher Colton Romero was outstanding, pitching 5 innings with 10 strikeouts, scattering 4 hits with one win. Romero, heading to play baseball at Skagit Valley College, has 35 strikeouts on the season. Sophomore Bryce Deleon started at 2nd base and had 2 singles and a run scored. 1st baseman Rylin Politika had two singles and a run scored. Jordan Shumway got on base 4 times and scored a run. Shortstop Alex Angevine got on base 4 times and scored a run. Nathan Basden got on base 4 times with a double and scored a run. The Roughriders return home Thursday against North Mason at Civic Field with a 4:15 start. You can hear that game live on KONP Newsradio. Oly Archibald and Gary Reidel will have the play-by-play.

Sequim beat Bremerton on the road 12-8.

In girls fast-pitch action, Port Angeles beat Sequim 14-2. Heidi Leitz walked 3 times and scored 3 times. Lynzee Reid had a double, a single, and 1 RBI. Natalie Robinson hit 2 doubles, a single, and had 4 RBIs. Kennedy Rognlien hit 2 singles and had 2 RBIs. Pitcher Lynzee Reid pitched 5 innings with 3 strikeouts
