DUNGENESS — A hiker was taken to safety using a boat this weekend at Dungeness Spit. Clallam County Fire District #3 sprang into action after receiving a distress call regarding a hiker in need of assistance at the Dungeness Spit Lighthouse. Reports indicated that the hiker, located approximately 4.5 miles out on the Dungeness Spit, had sustained an ankle injury and was unable to return to the Dungeness Recreational area.

With the impending high tide at 10:08 pm, the situation became urgent. It was deemed unsafe for the fire district’s utility task vehicle (UTV) to embark on the approximately 5.5-mile journey to the lighthouse and back in time. Consequently, CCFD#3 swiftly deployed its Marine Unit from Dungeness Landing County Park to the lighthouse.

Crew members reached the stranded hiker, assessed the injury, and provided necessary assistance. The patient, accompanied by their significant other, was safely transported back to the boat launch, with a full recovery expected.

The Dungeness Lighthouse Trail attracts numerous visitors, but its rocky terrain and changing conditions warrant caution.  CCFD#3 officials remind hikers to adhere to general hiking safety guidelines to minimize risks.
