PORT ANGELES – One person was airlifted after an overturned car was discovered Saturday morning off Deer Park Road.

At about 8 am, Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue raced to a car accident near the 6.5-mile marker on Deer Park Road. They got a call about a car that had skidded off the road and tumbled down an embankment with someone trapped inside. The on-duty team called for backup right away, pulling in off-duty folks and volunteers who came loaded with extra gear. On the way there, they even called for a Lifeflight helicopter, thinking they might need to rush the trapped person to a Seattle trauma center.

When the rescue team got there, they found a car that had smashed into a tree. The driver, who was alone, was seriously hurt, pinned in the wreck about 20 feet down from the road. The rescuers used special tools to cut the victim free, then lifted them to the road using a Stokes litter where paramedics from Olympic Ambulance were ready to take over.

The injuries were so severe they decided to airlift the person right from a nearby field on the 7000 Block of Deer Park Road. The helicopter touched down quickly, picked up the victim, and flew them to Harborview Medical Center for more care. It looks like the crash might have happened sometime during the night and was only spotted by someone passing by around 8 AM. The Clallam County Sheriff’s office continues to investigate.
