Port Angeles – A travel trailer fire in the early morning hours Thursday at the Monroe Estates RV Park left the male occupant hospitalized and his home a total loss.

Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue was dispatched at 01:00am to 2442 East Highway 101. They arrived to find the trailer fully engulfed in flames.

The single adult male occupant had managed to escape on his own and was being tended to by neighbors. One neighbor says the man was on fire when he emerged from the trailer. He was eventually treated by an Olympic Ambulance paramedic unit and transported to Olympic Medical center with burn injuries. There was no update on his condition at the time of this report.

Fire crews were able to quickly knock down the fire, but the trailer was a total loss. A neighboring trailer had electrical lines fall across it and suffered heat damage to the side nearest the fire. That neighbor was awoken by her dog and managed to get out of her trailer without injury.

The cause of the fire is unknown due to the extensive damage to the trailer, but Clallam 2 Fire Chief Jake Patterson said the fire is suspected to have been accidental in nature.

He said several neighbors came together to assist not only the victim of the fire, but also their neighbors on a cold night after the power was shut off because of the fallen power lines.

Clallam PUD was able to isolate the downed electrical line and then make repairs and restore power.
